On to "Jockey Hollow", Day 20, Friday, June 18,1976, Jockey Hollow National Historical Park,Morristown, NJ ....22mi

We are a day late getting to Jockey Hollow. This day should have been a rest day.
Originally we were  told that we would only be traveling 5or 6  days a week, this is our 5th day on the road and another rest day is not scheduled till next week.
Many people have been sick, now the horses are starting to get sick as well. The horses all seem to have an upper respiratory condition. There was no vet traveling with us so when vet care was needed a local vet was called in. Unfortunately this meant  no continuity of care.

Journal Entry: Day 20, Friday,  June 18, 1976, Jockey Hollow National Historical Park, Morristown,NJ...22mi

Everyone thought we were leaving at 7, but we left at 8.  Lee Ritchie's father passed away so he was not with us today so Micky Robison, the National Trails Coordinator  is here filling in and & she is insisting that we leave on time.  Today we have VT. In front of us and N.H. behind which is working rather well.  The Massachusetts Wagon with their mule hitch is behind Connecticut.

We stopped for lunch at a ball field and but then they had us go again because they wanted us at the restaurant across the street so we hooked up again and moved.  The Widow Brown’s Restaurant served us a very good free lunch:  fried chicken, roast beef, ham, etc. and a  live band to eat by.

After lunch the Mass.Wagon cut in front (Lee was driving G & Thunder, I was riding Breezy) even though Roger said to stay in order.   And so on our way up the back road to Jockey Hollow a race was had to gain re-position but to no avail and the NY Wagon almost got wiped out on a post. Jim Allred from Arizona was driving the mules .

Camp at Jockey Hollow

At camp they tried to have a teamsters meeting at the Penn Wagon but there were too many spectators people trying to but in. Later a man from Pennsylvania (George Keegak ?), came and we had another meeting (12 midnight) The meeting was about tomorrows mileage ,said to be 27 mi. A lot of the teamsters do not want to go because their horses need shoeing or they are sick with colds. The Vet came tonight  and gave some of the horses shots. G is starting to have some symptoms so he gave her a shot... I think it was Penicillin. Many of the horses have an upper respiratory ailment , no one knows whether it's bacterial or viral.  They say some of the teams will be trucked to Voorhees State Park  and will join the Train for the last five mile leg to Spruce Run State Park. Those that wish to go the whole day will meet them there.I went to bed at 12:30, Lee was  there already.
Also.. it rained again tonight.
