Journal Entry Day 24, Tuesday, June 22,1976, Hightstown
High School, Hightstown,NJ, .....21mi predicted ...actual 31mi
This morning we started out with Breezy &
Thunder on the pole and I was riding G.
Dawn was riding with Lee in the
wagon.
Tom K signing "The Book" on the road with G looking on |
After a short while G started
acting up so I decided to drive and let Lee ride- at the lunch break he hooked
up the 2 mares(Breezy and G), to give Thunder a break- to no avail. They would not move, there were about 10 of
us pushing & shoving- hooked Breezy
& Thunder back in and took off just fine.
We ponied G for a little while then Lee rode again and I drove the
team.
As the days got hotter some clothing got lighter ! We were on some really long hot drives in Jersey ! This day we were told that we would be traveling 21 miles, at the end of the day somewhere we has picked up an extra 10 miles ... total for this day was a very hot 31 miles.
At lunch we were served sandwiches and punch from the Chuck Wagon |
Gloria Boylan and the Massachusetts Wagon |

One of the Connecticut team's bridle fell off again this afternoon .This happens every once and a while.
( Not sure when it happened but there was one night when the Ct horses actually tipped the wagon over in the middle of the night with people asleep in the wagon !) We all tied our horses to the wagons. It did make for some interesting nights. Also all the horses had to be fed at the same time in the morning, because as soon as one got fed the others started to shake the wagons.
Bev Lyman was one of the girls who always tried to wear period dresses |
Sandy Munroe & I took off to finally do the laundry . Later I was able to take a shower. They were right there in the school and open all night. We are actually camped on the high school grounds. Probably the first night everybody could get a shower in one night !
Last night was a great night with no
problems. All went well in the encampment. We pulled out of Washington's
Crossing at 7:15 am heading for Hightstown, NJ. You could tell right away
it was going to be another hot and humid day. We were planning a 21 mile
trip today, but when all was said and done, it ended up being 31 miles.
Jack and Colonel are stepping right out today and right on their toes.
They seem somewhat spirited today, even spooking at things they've seen or
heard a hundred times before. Our CT Outrider's horse Gretchen
pulled up lame today so Geri had her trucked to the next encampment and
Geri is riding in the CT Wagon with us. She is very upset and worried
about Gretchen. Even though it was a longer trek than expected, all went
pretty good, except that Jack's bridle fell off again this afternoon after
he spooked at something, so we had to stop the Wagon Train until we got it back
on and straightened out. We passed several farms today, and a stretch of
farmland that was about 5 miles long. That was real nice.
