Journal Entry ,Tuesday June 8,1976, Community Park,
Southbury,Ct... 18mi
Very Hot today 90 degrees , lunch was at an amusement park many
jumped into the lake.
Tonight Lee tried
fitting our new harnesses only to find they are built backwards!( We had new harnesses built in Pennsylvania by an Amish man, Issac Petershime. We traveled there one year ago to order them and they were delivered just before we started on the train. Being so busy we didn't have time to try them out!)
This is a very nice town.
We had a band, color guard escort into the field. They claim about 200 horse & about 10
extra wagons.*
Tonight there was a laundry & shower shuttle with Melissa. I went to see the world’s largest horse- at Don Civitello Farm , Sampson the horse at 4yrs old was 20H2”, 3000 lbs.
* recieved this post from Stan Bashura, Ct Teamster:
"Here is what I had
written in the CT Wagon Journal for our trip from Waterbury to
Southbury: We left Waterbury early at about 8:15 am. We are
headed for Community House Field in Southbury. Riding with us in the Conn
Wagon is the Mayor of Waterbury and his son. They stayed with us until we
reached Robin Road, which was one heck of a hill to get up. The
horses struggled a little. We are no longer a "4 up"
hitch. We dropped down to two Belgian horses, Colonel and
Major. We sent our injured horse home to the Kriz Ranch in Bethany. We
had two brief stops along the way, one in Middlebury for a brief ceremony and
one in the Middle Quarter of Woodbury on Rte 64 to rest and water the
horses. We got to Southbury early and had, in our opinion, one of the
best receptions from the towns folk to date."
